I just receive a pretty large document from Liberty in North Korea (LiNK). The "manifesto" (my word) refered to in the passage below is in the post continuation. They have a few more events as part of "Project Sunshine." I hope you can make it to at least one.

안녕하세요. 저희는 LiNK (Liberty in North Korea)라고 대학생들이 모여서 만든 미국에 본부를 둔 북한 인권 보호 단체입니다. 방금 읽으신 것처럼 지금 북한서는 아주 기본적인 인권들이 무참히 짓밟히고 있습니다. 다음주 수요일까지 여러곳에서 "서울기차"라는 다큐멘터리 상영과 심포지엄을 하고 있으니, 위 사실들이 믿기지 않거나, 더 알고 싶으신분들은 꼭 와서 같이 토론하는 시간을 가졌으면 합니다. 물론, 모든 행사는 무료입니다.그리고 다음주 수요일(5/31) 오전 11:30에 광화문 교보문고 앞에서 검정색 옷을 입고 북한 인권을 위한 시위를 합니다 . 많은 참여 부탁드리고, 이 글을 최대한 많이 퍼트려 주시기 바랍니다.
Hello. We are LiNK (Liberty in North Korea), a student group that works for North Korean Human Rights. As you have just read [see below], even the most basic human rights are being violated in North Korea. Throughout the following week, we will be hosting symposiums and screenings of the award-winning documentary, “Seoul Train.” So if you have any questions about what you have just read, please come out to discuss the issues. This Wednesday (5/31) at 11:30, we will be meeting in front of the Kyobo Building at Kwanghwa-moon, dressed in black clothing, for a protest for North Korean human rights. I hope to see many of you participate, and ask that you spread the word about our cause.

여러분들은 북한을 어떤 존재라고 생각하십니까? 단순히- 갈 수 없는 곳이라고 생각하십니까? 자유롭게 드나들 수 없는, 우리의 손길이 닿지 않는 곳이라고 생각하십니까? 지리적으로 한국에서 가장 가까운 나라임에도 불구하고, 이 세상에서 존재하지 않는 듯 취급하는 곳, 우리에게 북한은 그런 곳입니까?
What kind of country do you consider North Korea to be? Simply a place where we will never be able to go? Somewhere we cannot go freely, where our efforts will not be reached? Despite the fact that it is geographically the closest country to South Korea, is North Korea a country whose existence we simply ignore?
우리는 바다 건너편에 있는 일본에 대해서 정말 잘 알고 있습니다. 일본 학생들이 어떤 노래를 듣는지, 어떤 옷을 입는지, 심지어 어떤 환경에서 어떤 교육을 받는지를- 가 보지 않아도 , 잘 압니다. 그럼, 북한 학생들이 어떤 노래를 듣고, 어떤 옷을 입고, 어떤 음식을 먹고 사는지 아시나요?
We know so much about Japan, a country that is separated from us by sea. We know so much about Japan— pop culture, fashion, even their educational system— without even ever stepping foot there. But, do you know what kind of songs North Korean students sing? Or what kind of clothes they wear? Or even what kinds of food they eat?
그럼, 태평양 건너편- 한국에서 수천 km나 떨어져 있는, 미국이라는 나라 대해서는 잘 알고 계십니까? 적어도 북한에 대해서보다는 잘 아실 겁니다. 비록 영어를 잘 하진 못하더라도- 미국에서 어떤 일들이 일어나는지, 부시대통령이 어떤 정책을 지지하는지 모두 잘 알고 있습니다. 북한인들은 절대 외국인이 아닙니다. 우리와 같은 피를 지닌 한 민족- 같은 한국인입니다. 그들은 경계선 건너편에 있는 우리입니다.
Now let’s consider America, far across the Pacific, a country that is miles away from Korea. What you know about America is, most likely, more than you know about North Korea. Even without being fluent in English, we know about the everyday lives of Americans and Bush’s opinion on various policies. By all means, North Koreans should not be seen as foreigners. We share the same blood; we are both Korean. They are not the “other” but the “us” across the border.
지금부터는 (바다 건너편도 아니고, 지구 반대편도 아닌, 영어가 아닌 우리나라말을 쓰는 곳), 북한에 대해 알려드리겠습니다 . 북한은 한국과 많이 다릅니다. 우선 자유가 보장되지 않습니다. 김정일의 얼굴이 프린트 된 인쇄물을 접거나, 그 위에 앉았을 경우. 남한에서 유행하는 노래를 부를 경우 , 우리가 생각하기에는 대수롭지 않은 일들로 인해 - 체포당하고, 심지어는 처형까지 당합니다.
Now let me talk to you about North Korea, a country that is not across the sea, nor across the globe, but merely a half an hour away. North Korea is very different from South Korea. First of all, there, freedom is not guaranteed. If you fold or sit on a flier with Kim Jong Il’s face, or if you sing a South Korean pop song, all things that we consider only trivial can result in imprisonment and sometimes even capital punishment.
북한이 가난하다는 사실은 다들 아시죠?
Almost everyone knows that North Korea is poor.
1994년 대홍수때 부터 시작된 북한경제 위기는 상상하기 어려울 정도입니다. 북한에서는 백 원이면 , 감기약을 하나 살 수 있습니다. 하지만 그 백 원짜리 감기약을 살 수 없어서 목숨을 잃는 사람들이 있습니다. 우리가 쉽게 사서 마시는 칠백 원짜리 캔 음료수, 날씨가 덥거나 목이 마르면 아무 주저함 없이, 어려움 없이 쉽게 사서 마십니다. 그런데 그 칠백 원이면 북한에서는 일곱 명의 생명이 살아납니다.
Since the great flood of 1994, North Korea’s economy has worsened beyond belief. In North Korea cold medicine costs only 100 won (about $0.10). But there are many people who die because they cannot even afford this. Whenever the weather is hot or we become a little bit thirsty, we easily buy a drink that costs about 700 won (about $0.70). But with the same amount of money, in North Korea, we can save seven lives.
또, 북한에는 '정치범 수용소'라는 곳이 있습니다. 정말 끔찍한 곳입니다. 한마디로 '사람이 사람대접을 못 받고, 심지어 개취급조차 받지 못하는 곳입니다.' 영화- 쉰 들러 리스트나 피아니스트 에서 볼 수 있는 인간이 했다고는 믿겨질 수 없는, 믿어지지 않는 - 보기만 해도 화가 치밀어 오르고 소름이 끼치는 잔인한 장면들. 그런 일들이 - 아니, 그 보다 더 심한 일들이 지금 이 21세기에 북한 수용소 안에서 일어나고 있습니다.
Also, in North Korea, there are political prison labor camps. These are horrendous places. Bluntly put, people are not treated as human beings, but as if they are even below animals. Atrocities that we thought could only be seen in movies, such as ‘Schindler’s List’ or ‘The Pianist,’ continue to occur today, in the 21st century in North Korean prison camps.
며칠 전에 제 할아버지께서 돌아가셨습니다. 다섯 달 동안 병환으로 힘들어하시다가 지난 화요일 새벽에 임종하셨습니다. 중환자실에서의 숨을 고르시던 모습부터 시신을 입관하고 관을 묘지에 발인할 때까지 , 온몸에 전율하던 슬픔은 너무나 고통스러웠습니다 .
A few days ago, my grandfather passed away after suffering from his sickness for five months. From the moment he took his last breath, to the moment his coffin was buried, the sadness that came over me is indescribable.
여러분들께서도 이런 경험은 한 번씩 있으시겠지요? 비록 단 한 사람의 죽음이지만, 사랑하는 우리 가족의 죽음이 주는 고통이 얼마나 큰 것인지, 우리는 모두 알고 있습니다. 그런데 같은 민족인 북한 동포가 수백만 명씩 수용소와 길거리에서 쓰러져 죽어가고 있습니다.
Some of you may have experienced something similar to what I have experienced. Even though it is but one person, the pain that comes from losing a loved one is unbearable. But, our brothers and sisters in North Korea are dying by the millions in prisoner camps and on the streets.
북한에서는 병원에서 죽는다는 것은 소위 엘리트들, 권력계층만이 누릴 수 있는 특권입니다. 평범한 사람들은 장례식은 꿈도 못 꿉니다.
Dying in a hospital, in fact, is even seen as a luxury that can only be enjoyed by the upper class. The average North Korean cannot even fathom having a funeral.
지금 이 글을 읽고 계시는 이 순간에도 고아, 여성, 노인 등 수 많은 북한 동포들이 우리가 상상할 수 없는 절망의 하루하루, 다음 한 끼니를 걱정하며 힘겹게 살아가고 있습니다. 그 고통을 견뎌내지 못해서 죽음을 택하는 사람도 많습니다.
Even at this very moment, as you read through the article, North Koreans—orphans, women, and the elderly—are barely getting by, wondering if they will be able to eat their next meal. Some people cannot bear the pain and choose instead to end their lives.
그럼 이러한 상황에서 - 과연 , 이러한 일이 누구의 책임인지, 누구의 잘못인지 우리는 늘 묻곤 하죠. 그럼 이것은 누구의 책임인가요? 북한을 이끄는 김정일 탓인가요 ? 물론, 부분적으로는 맞습니다. 리더는 그 집단을 이끌어 가니까요. 그러나 무엇보다 우리의 책임이 큽니다. ' 북한이 지난 50여 년간 이러한 고통 속에 신음하고 있게끔 모른 척 한 것만 해도 - 같은 민족으로서 말이 안 됩니다. 우리가 잘못했습니다.
So in this situation, who is responsible? Who is at fault? Is it Kim Jong Il, who leads the country? Yes, that is partially true, for he is the leader of the regime. However, we are also greatly at fault. Despite the fact that North Korea has been suffering for the past fifty years, we have been ignorant of the situation of our brothers. We have been wrong.
같은 사람으로서, 같은 인간으로서, 이건 전 인류가 나눠져야 할 짐입니다. 특히 같은 한국말을 쓰고, 같은 피를 나눈 한 민족으로서 - 그 누구보다 우리가 풀어나가야 할 과제입니다.
As a person, another human being, we are all responsible for these atrocities. But, as people who speak the same Korean and share the same Korean blood, we must lead the way in resolving the crisis.
저는 얼마 후, 뉴스나 신문 같은 대중매체를 통해 '북한 인권을 위해 열정을 쏟으며 - 밝은 희망을 외치는 여러분들' 을 볼 수 있기를 소망합니다. 굶주려 죽는 백만의 북한 동포가 줄어들었다는 보도를 듣기를 소망합니다. 여러분들이 한 알의 밀알이 되어 세상을 변화시킬 것임을 믿습니다.
My hope is that in the near future I will hear about the millions of people working passionately for North Korean human rights. I hope to hear reports about the decreasing famine in North Korea. And I believe that your individual support will become the basis for change around the world.
